NATURE ATTRACTION – Flamboyant forms, vibrant colors, long blooming season, and fail-proof results best describe the Torch Lily. Their waxy tube-shaped blossoms blaze in reds, oranges, and golds on study stems that rise ramrod straight. Also known as red-hot pokers, they are highly performing must have plants for every garden.
KEY TIPS – Plants can take intense sun on the flowers and leaves. Big, bold, and bright colors couldn’t be more pleasing with so little effort beckoning hummingbirds and bees. They will grow in any type of soil whether it is graveling or clayish so plant them in that one spot that nothing else grows.
SHELF LIFE – Plant into the garden as soon as the ground has thawed enough to dig.
PREPARATION - Remove each bare root from their plastic bag. It is best to trim away yellow or brown leaves that may have occurred. Initial grooming means more flowers on more vigorous stems.
DETERMINING THE BOTTOM OR TOP OF CLUMPS – These clumps have roots radiating from a central point or crown. These fleshy roots should be put into the soil facing downward.
GARDEN LOCATION – They like full sun although partial fine too.
POTTED PLANTS – These prefer to be placed directly in the garden as opposed to pots or containers.
SOIL PREPARATION – They will grow in just about any type of soil. No kidding!
PLANTING DEPTH and SPACING - Plant separately spacing about 18-36 inches. Dig holes twice the width of the root ball and about 6-8 inches deep. Place them in their holes. Cover with an inch or two of soil and pack soil firmly around crown.
PLANT HEIGHT – They will grow about 24-36 inches tall.
SPROUTING TIME - Sprouts in May after a couple weeks. In the ground it takes a little longer if the temperatures are still cool.
WATER - Water thoroughly upon planting and a couple times per week until the get well established. They are drought tolerant beginning the second season.
FERTILIZER – This helps maintain flower size and count from year to year. For best results, use Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a month all summer long.
LIGHTING -Full sun is preferred though half day is sufficient.
BLOOMING – These plants will bloom early summer through late summer. TEMPERATURE ZONE 5 to 10- These are hardy down to a minus 20 F below 0.
WINTER DORMANCY – Cut away any old growth in the following spring that has turned brown. In cold winter areas, this will be all of the plant. In warmer areas, it may only amount to a small “hair cut”.
PROPAGATING- They can be subdivided in late autumn or early spring after 2-3 years. Just stick a shovel or trowel down between the clumps and pull apart anywhere. They love it!
GROOMING - Simply cut away bloomed out stems after spent during the summer.
CUT FLOWERS - If you want to cut your stems for a flower vase, cut the entire stem STAKING – Even with their tall flowers, the stems need no staking.
DEER RESISTANT – Yes they are deer proof!
