NATURE ATTRACTION – Not only does the bloom season extend for many months on the. Dropmore Scarlet Honeysuckle, but the flower set is amazing! Expect countless bright scarlet orange-red blooms on this quick-growing vine that is well suited for any climate. The flowers glow against its handsome blue-green foliage.
KEY TIPS – As a climber, they need a wall, trellis, net, or wire cage. These plants require little attention and grow in about any soil type. Heavy pruning in autumn after flowering encourages more robust and bushy growth with more profuse flowers next spring. Under correct conditions, blooming begins in mid spring and last well into late October.
SHELF LIFE - Plant into garden or larger pots and place outside immediately after the night temperatures stay above 45 degrees.
PLANT PREPARATION – Unpack your plants immediately removing any packing material. Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred.
Water them immediately.
POTTED PLANTS - Rather than in the garden you may re-pot into large containers. Repot the plants into at least 15 inch pots separately or together inside one larger container. As a climber, they need a wall, trellis, net, or wire cage.
SOIL – Any type of soil works o.k.
GARDEN PREPARATION Pick a sunny location near a wall or where you can add a trellis, net, or wire cage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting in garden or together in one container space 3 to 6 feet apart.
PLANTING DEPTH - Dig holes twice the width of the root ball and about 5-6 inches deep. Place them in their holes. Pack soil firmly around roots.
PLANT HEIGHT AND WIDTH – The first year they will grow about 4 – 6 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. By the end of third season they will be triple that size.
WATER - Water upon planting. Their soil likes to remain damp during their growing season.
FERTILIZER – They respond to feeding with a high bloom fertilizer like Flower Magic plant food (M7503). Twice a month is sufficient.
TEMPERATURE ZONES 4 to10 -When nights stay above 45 degrees, place your plants outside and leave them there. They can withstand winter temperatures to minus 30 below 0 Fahrenheit.
LIGHTING - In the summer growing season, full sun is the absolute best. Otherwise a half a day of sun is sufficient.
BLOOMING – Under correct conditions, blooming begins in mid spring and last well into late October.
DORMANCY – These plants will lose all of their foliage in the winter.
PRUNING – You may prune hard after flowering each season to about half its current height. This encourages branching. In addition if you prune some of vines all of the way to the ground, more shoots will occur next spring from the ground up.
STAKING - As a climber, they need a wall, trellis, net, or wire cage.
