NATURE ATTRACTION – Heirlooms in the making! The fragrant ‘Good Hope’ Yellow Clivia are much sought after world-wide for their beauty, indestructibility, and long-lived vigor. Native only to southern Africa, these rare and rugged evergreen houseplants require very little attention and bloom in the shade inside the home living for decades growing more impressive with age.
KEY TIPS – Clivia like it on the dry side to say the least watering every 2 weeks from April through October. From November through March only water every 2 months!
SHELF LIFE – Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot(s). Transplant into larger 8 inch containers separately or together in even a larger container.
PLANT Preparation- Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred.  This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS- Repot the plants into larger 8 inch pots separately or together inside one larger container. Do not re-pot for 3-5 years. They bloom better when root-bound and crowded.
Soil- They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will drain well.  Most garden centers carry various brand names with perlite, vermiculite, soil and sand.
GARDEN PREPARATION – If you live where it rarely dips below 45 degrees, they may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting into the frost free garden, space 24 inches. In pots, use separate 8 inch pots or combine in larger pots spacing 12 inches.
PLANT HEIGHT – These will grow 2-3 feet in about 12-18 months.
Water- Clivia like it on the dry side to say the least watering every 2 weeks from April through October. From November through March only water every 2 months! Too much water causes pale green or bright cankers on the leaves eventually damaging the plant permanently.
DRAINAGE -Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot leaving nothing inside the drip dish below the pot.
FERTILIZER- To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a week from April- September.
LIGHTING- Shade or bright daylight is required. A north window or exposure is ideal. Direct sun can easily burn the leaves.
BLOOMING -Their fragrant flowering heads of bright yellow appear in late spring through early summer beginning the second season. They will live for decades on end and grow more impressive with age.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 9 to 11- These are hardy down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live where it rarely freezes they may remain outside year round.
WINTER DORMANCY – Plants rest from November through April. Though they keep their foliage. From November – March only water every 2 months!
GROOMING- Cut away spent flowers stalks at the base and remove any leaves as they wither or turn brown. This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows. New leaves and stems appear as the old ones are pruned away.
PROPAGATING- These plants should be left untouched.
CUT FLOWERS – Leave them on their plants rather than using them in vases.
