NATURE ATTRACTION – ‘Pet Rock’ Living Stones is a collection of curious little succulents with a life of their own. From the driest part of South Africa’s Cape, these fascinating plants look like smooth river stones. Long lived you will want to name each one individually.
KEY TIPS – If leaving inside original container, push down soil packing in plants firmly. If transplanting together in one pot, use a larger yet still shallow 6 to 8 inch container. Do not use a drip dish that retains water. Clay containers work well as it lends to drying out the soil media faster. Individually scoop out plants, position in new container, and push down soil packing in plants firmly.
PLANT Preparation- Unpack your plants immediately removing any packing material and outer pot(s) used as a cover during transit. Do not water. Remove any dislodged leaves.
POTTED PLANTS- If leaving inside original container, push down soil packing in plants firmly. If transplanting together in one pot, use a larger yet still shallow 6 to 8 inch container. RE-POTTING – Individually scoop out plants, position in new container, and push down soil packing in plants firmly. Root system is very small so don’t despair. Then water lightly repeating once a month.
Soil- They like a coarse true cactus mixture sand, gravel, and perlite. Most garden centers carry various brand names in small bags.
GARDEN PREPARATION – These prefer to remain in pots unless you live in a low dessert area.
PLANTING SPACING – Plant as tight as you want touching each other or a couple inches apart
PLANT HEIGHT AND WIDTH – These will grow 2-4 inches tall and 2-3 inches wide.
Water- Once inside the container you plan to keep them in, water lightly until it drains through the pot. Do not use a catch drip dish. Repeat water only once a month.
FERTILIZER- They prefer leaf feeding rather than in the soil.
Use a well balanced fertilizer like Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a month.
LIGHTING- Partial or full sun is preferred.
Blooming – These will often send up white or yellow flowers in early autumn. The flowers open by day and close at night.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 10 to 11- When nights stay above 55 degrees you may place your plants outside and leave them there all summer long- the hotter the better. When temperatures drop below 55 degrees in the autumn, bring your plants inside. If you live where nights rarely drop below 40 degrees, you can leave your plants outside year round provided they are sheltered from winter rains!
WINTER CARE – Plants slow down a little from November through April. Place in a bright-lighted room or sunny window and reduce watering to once a week.
GROOMING- . They may drop some foliage as new growth ensues. Do not remove old foliage as it acts nutrient compost. Eventually it will become dislodged and fall away on its own. Remove spent flowers.
