NATURE ATTRACTION – A blizzard of orange furry tufts burst forth with the ‘Lion’s Ear’ Leonotis. This striking South African plant bears whorls of tawny orange, fur-like flowers that resemble a lion’s fur. Adding to its unique appeal, the leaves are also very aromatic!
KEY TIPS – Place outside in summer. Yearly pruning is recommended during late fall. Trim about one half of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth
SHELF LIFE – Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot(s).
PLANT Preparation- Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred.  This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS- Repot the plants into larger 8 -10 inch pots separately. You can transplant one pot size per year in spring or summer up to a 15 inch container.
SUPPORT – None is needed.
Soil- They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will drain well.  Most garden centers carry various brand names with perlite, vermiculite, soil and sand. In the garden amend soil.
GARDEN PREPARATION – If you live where it rarely dips below 40 degrees, they may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting in garden space 3-4 feet apart.
PLANT HEIGHT AND WIDTH – These will grow 4-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide in about 18-24 months.
Water- Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot. Be sure to keep excess water out of any saucer underneath pot. Twice a week is sufficient in summer and less than once a week in winter.
FERTILIZER- To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a month April through October.
LIGHTING- Full sun is preferred but half day is sufficient.
Blooming – These will bloom heaviest early summer through late fall and periodically in the spring.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 10 to 11- When nights stay above 55 degrees place your plants outside and leave them there all summer long- the hotter the better. The point is they like a change in day to night temperatures to grow and bloom properly. When temperatures drop below 55 degrees in the autumn, bring your plants inside. If you live where nights rarely drop below 40 degrees, you can leave your plants outside year round.
WINTER CARE – Plants slow down a little from November through April. They may drop some foliage though not much. Place in a bright-lighted room or sunny window and reduce watering to less than once a week.
PRUNING – Yearly pruning is recommended during late fall. Trim about one half of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth.
GROOMING- Remove spent flowers. In addition, cut away any yellow, brown leaves or broken stems that naturally occur.
