NATURE ATTRACTION – Always in flower and easy to grow the unique Red and Yellow Shrimp plants will produce the most intriguing and impressive flowers you have ever seen. The ever-blooming flowers resemble jumbo-sized red and golden shrimp! Also known as Lollipop plants, they are profuse bloomers under varying light conditions.
KEY TIPS – Place outside in summer. Classified as a shrub, they can be grown with or without support. As a potted plant, yearly pruning is optional during late fall. Trim about one third of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth
SHELF LIFE – Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot(s).
PLANT Preparation- Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred. This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS- Repot the plants into larger 8 -10 inch pots separately. You can transplant one pot size per year in spring or summer up to a 15 inch container.
SUPPORT – Classified as a shrub, they can be grown with or without support.
Soil- They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will drain well. Most garden centers carry various brand names with perlite, vermiculite, soil and sand.
GARDEN PREPARATION – If you live where it rarely dips below 40 degrees, they may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting in garden space 24-26 inches apart.
PLANT HEIGHT AND WIDTH – These will grow 3-4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide in about 12-24 months.
Water- Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot. Be sure to keep excess water out of any saucer underneath pot. Keep moist, especially during the spring and summer repeating twice a week all summer long. Water once a week or less in winter.
FERTILIZER- To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a month April through October. They enjoy leaf feeding as often as you like.
LIGHTING- Partial or full sun is preferred.
Blooming – These will bloom heaviest mid-spring through late summer and periodically year round!
TEMPERATURE ZONE 9 to 11- When nights stay above 55 degrees place your plants outside and leave them there all summer long- the hotter the better. The point is they like a change in day to night temperatures to grow and bloom properly. When temperatures drop below 55 degrees in the autumn, bring your plants inside. If you live where nights rarely drop below 40 degrees, you can leave your plants outside year round.
WINTER CARE – Plants slow down a little from November through April. They may drop some foliage though not much. Place in a bright-lighted room or sunny window and reduce watering to once a week.
PRUNING – As a potted plant, yearly pruning is optional during late fall. Trim about one third of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth.
GROOMING- Remove spent flowers. In addition, cut away any yellow, brown leaves or broken stems that naturally occur. Monthly misting with a solution of soapy water will insure glossy pest free leaves. Mix half teaspoon of standard liquid dish soap in a quart spray bottle of water, shake, and mist the plant profusely.
