NATURE ATTRACTION – These Carnivorous Pitcher Plants create quite the stir and intriguing curiosity. Using their brightly colored pitcher-like leaves these North American natives, lure small insects that get trapped and absorbed by the plant.
KEY TIPS – Shallow pots work best. Their bright attractive flower-like foliage and nectar attract their food. Water with distilled or rain water keeping moist year round. Make sure that water gets inside the pitchers so that they can trap their food. These plants do not want any fertilizer. Please do not use
SHELF LIFE – Water with distilled or rain water allowing water inside the pitchers. Transplant into shallow 6 inch containers separately or together in even a larger yet still shallow container.
PLANT Preparation- Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred. This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS- Repot the plants into shallow 6 inch pots separately or together inside one larger yet still shallow container. Do not re-pot for 1-2 years. They grow better when root-bound and crowded.
Soil- They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that contain a mix of peat moss, sand, and other organic material.
GARDEN PREPARATION – If you live where it rarely dips below 35 degrees, they may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting into the frost free garden, space 9-15 inches. In pots, use separate 6 inch pots or combine in larger pots spacing 4-6 inches.
PLANT HEIGHT – These will grow 12-18 in about 12 months.
Water- Water with distilled or rain water keeping moist year round. Make sure that water gets inside the pitchers so that they can trap their food. Keep moist year round by using a tray underneath pots to catch water.
DRAINAGE -Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot. It is fine to leave excess water inside the drip tray below the pot.
FERTILIZER- These plants do not want any fertilizer. Please do not use.
LIGHTING- Dapple shade or bright daylight is required. A north window or exposure is ideal. Direct sun can easily burn the leaves.
BLOOMING –These plants do not flower in the real sense of the term. Their bright attractive flower-like foliage and nectar inside attract their food.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 7 to 11- These are hardy down to about 35 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live where it rarely dips below 35 degrees they may remain outside year round.
WINTER DORMANCY – Plants rest a little from November through April. Though they keep their foliage, new growth is limited.
GROOMING- Cut away spent flowers stalks at the base and remove any leaves as they wither or turn brown. This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows. New leaves and stems appear as the old ones are pruned away.
PROPAGATING- These plants should be left untouched.
CUT FLOWERS – Leave them on their plants rather than using them in vases.
STAKING – The flower stems need no staking.
