NATURE ATTRACTION – The ‘Touch Me Not’ or ‘Sensitive Plant’ will bring hours of entertainment to adults and kids of all ages! This bashful plant actually moves when you touch it causing its fern like foliage to close-up and droop. Re-opening within minutes, its curious nature is unique among the plant world.
KEY TIPS – Yearly pruning is recommended during early spring. Trim about one third to one half of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth.
SHELF LIFE – Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot(s).
PLANT Preparation- Be careful of the prickly areas near the leaf nodes by using garden gloves. It isn’t called the Touch Me Not Plant for nothing! Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred. This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows. It stimulates new growth!
POTTED PLANTS- Repot the plants into 6 inch pots separately or together inside larger containers. You may repot one size up per year into a maximum 10 inch pot individually.
Soil- They like bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will drain well. Most garden centers carry various brand names with perlite, vermiculite, soil and sand. In the garden amend soil.
GARDEN PREPARATION – If you live where it rarely dips below 40 degrees, they may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting into the frost free garden, space 15-18 inches. In pots, use separate 6 inch pots or combine in larger pots spacing 4-6 inches.
PLANT HEIGHT AND WIDTH – These will grow 15-18 tall and 12-15 inches wide in about 12 months.
Water- Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot. Keep moist. You may use a drip dish that catches the water.
DRAINAGE -Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot. It is fine to leave excess water inside the drip tray below the pot.
FERTILIZER - To promote more growth and flowers in late summer, use a well balanced fertilizer like Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a month.
LIGHTING- Full sun or partial sun is sufficient.
BLOOMING –These plants do flower in late summer and into early fall with small pink puffs of blooms that attract butterflies.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 10 to 11- These are hardy down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live where it rarely dips below 40 degrees they may remain outside year round.
WINTER DORMANCY – Plants rest a little from November through April. Though they keep their foliage, new growth is limited.
GROOMING- After flowering, cut away spent flowers about 2-3 inches below where the bloom occurred. This causes branching and new leaves and stems appear as the old ones are pruned away.
PRUNING – Yearly pruning is recommended during early spring. Trim about one third to one half of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth.
