NATURE ATTRACTION – A profuse bloomer and vigorous climber the Glory Bower Clerodendrum produces showy and unusual flowers like you’ve never seen. Also known as the Bleeding Heart Vine, their deep crimson heart-shaped flowers are surrounded by either white or purple petals.
KEY TIPS – Place outside in summer. Give plants some type of support as they are shrubby evergreen climbers.  A trellis, wire cage, netting or stakes work well.  You may intertwine and wrap them around each other and/or your means of support. As a potted plant, yearly pruning is recommended during late fall. Trim about one half or more of the growth off of any healthy branches. Flowers will ensue from new growth.
SHELF LIFE – Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot(s).
PLANT Preparation- Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that may have occurred.  This grooming is completely normal and will take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS- Repot the plants into larger 8 inch pots separately or together inside one larger 12 inch container. You can transplant one pot size per year in spring or summer up to a 15-20 inch container.
SUPPORT – Give plants some type of support as they are shrubby evergreen climbers.  A trellis, wire cage, netting or stakes work well.  You may intertwine and wrap them around each other and/or your means of support.
Soil- They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will drain well.  Most garden centers carry various brand names with perlite, vermiculite, soil and sand.
GARDEN PREPARATION – If you live where it rarely dips below 45 degrees, they may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting in garden space 12-18 inches apart. If planting into one container space 5-6 inches apart.
PLANT HEIGHT – These will grow 4-6 feet in about 12-24 months.
Water- Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain through the bottom of the pot. Be sure to keep excess water out of any saucer underneath pot. Keep moist, especially during the spring and summer repeating twice a week all summer long. Water once a week or less in winter.
FERTILIZER- To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a month April through October. They enjoy leaf feeding as often as you like.
LIGHTING- Full or partial sun is preferred.
Blooming – These will bloom heaviest spring through summer and periodically year round!
TEMPERATURE ZONE 10 to 11- When nights stay above 50 degrees place your plants outside and leave them there all summer long- the hotter the better. The point is they like a change in day to night temperatures to grow and bloom properly. When temperatures drop below 45 degrees in the autumn, bring your plants inside. If you live where nights rarely drop below 45 degrees, you can leave your plants outside year round.
WINTER CARE – Plants slow down a little from November through April. They may drop some foliage though not much. Place in a bright-lighted room or sunny window and reduce watering to once a week.
PRUNING – As a potted plant, yearly pruning is recommended during late fall. Trim about one half or more of the growth off of any healthy branches. Also, remove small spindly twigs at base and any dead or damaged branches too. New growth will occur in a bushier habit. Flowers ensue from new growth.
GROOMING- Remove spent flowers. In addition, cut away any yellow, brown leaves or broken stems that naturally occur. Monthly misting with a solution of soapy water will insure glossy pest free leaves. Mix ½ teaspoon of standard liquid dish soap in a quart spray bottle of water, shake, and mist the plant profusely.
