NATURE ATTRACTION – The flowers open in the day and close at night. Blooms attract butterflies, dragonflies, and hummingbirds.  The water lily creates good habitat for fish and frogs.
KEY TIPS – Plant tubers at a slight angle. Do not use any sanitizing chemicals in the water. Remove spent flowers and leaves to maintain a neater appearance. Green algae will form on surface of water until leaves grow large enough to block out the sun. The algae can be removed by hand but the water lily actually prefers it.
SHELF LIFE – Keep your kit in a cool dark place until ready to plant.  Pot up and place in your pond once the night temperatures stay above 40 degrees.
PREPARATION – Unpack materials. Remove water lilies from their plastic bag shaking off excess packing material. Place ½ contents of clay media into each planter basket. The water lily tubers should be planted on their side at a slight angle with sprouts facing upward inside basket. Cover with remaining clay being careful not to damage existing growth.
DETERMINING THE BOTTOM OR TOP OF RHIZOMES – The water lily tubers should be planted on their side at a slight angle with sprouts facing upward.
SUBMERGING PLANTS – Simply drop planted kits into water garden, pond, or water barrel making sure they stand erect.
MEDIA PREPARATION – The water lilies come with a kit that includes clay media. Do not add any soil media.
GRAVEL APPLICATION – Empty and spread out contents of gravel onto the top of clay of inside each container once lilies have been planted. It is recommended to spread gravel toward the side so the sprouts can easily grow through the clay.
SUBMERGING DEPTH and SPACING - Submerge at a depth of 16-24 inches deep spacing about 12-24 inches apart.
SPROUTING TIME - Once your water temperature rises above 55 degrees your water lily will break dormancy and begin to grow.  Plants will remain dormant in colder water.
WATER Do not use any sanitizing chemicals in the water. Keep submerged all year long if left in water at a depth that won’t turn to ice at the crown of the plant. This way the rhizome stays intact as the leaves freeze away. Otherwise lift pots from water, cut back top side growth, and store in pots in dormant condition until the following spring.
FERTILIZER – Two fertilizer tablets should be added per container upon planting. LIGHTING -Full or partial sun is preferred.
BLOOMING – These plants will bloom all summer through autumn yearly. TEMPERATURE ZONE 4 to 10- These water lilies are hardy as long as they are placed in a pond at an appropriate depth so the tuber remains below the ice level in winter. The tuber must be kept from freezing in the pot.
WINTER DORMANCY – In late fall cut away any remaining blooms and leaves.  You can leave submerged in water at a depth that won’t turn to ice at the crown of the plant. This way the rhizome stays intact as the leaves freeze away. Otherwise lift pots from water and store in pots keeping moist at a temperature above freezing. Re-submerge in spring.
PROPAGATING- This perennial can be sub-divided every 3-4 years. Otherwise they self multiply horizontally if placed into larger containers anytime.
CUT FLOWERS – They make great centerpieces when placed in a glass bowl arrangement.
GROOMING – Green algae will form on surface of water until leaves grow large enough to block out the sun. The algae can be removed by hand but the water lily actually prefers it. Cutting away any spent flowers or foliage is recommended though not necessary.
