NATURE ATTRACTION – These plants attract hummingbirds and butterflies
to their nectar rich pollen bearing anthers.
KEY TIPS – Growing well in full sun or partial sun, you can place them just
about anywhere for borders and container specimens, Keep moist in summer
and stop watering in dormant winter months. They make great cut flowers!
DETERMINING THE TOP OF BULB - The pointed end is up. The flat side is
down.
SPROUTING TIME – Blooms often come before the leaves! Different colors
sprout and bloom at different times. Planted now each bulb will produce flowers
beginning with the pink in early summer; red in late summer, and white in
early autumn.
BULB PREPARATION - These bulbs be planted immediately in pots. You can
move them into the garden after the ground has thawed permanently.
SHELF LIFE - To insure adequate blooming time, planting should occur by
June.
FLOWERING AND LEAFING - They produce flowers before they produce
their strap- like leaves.
POT SIZE - Plant two or three bulbs together into one 10 inch pot. Combine
more into larger pots. Plastic pots with drainage holes work the best. These
plants like to be left undisturbed for 3-5 years.
PLANTING DEPTH and SPACING – Cover top of bulbs with only 1/2 inch of
soil. If planting in garden or together in one container space 6 to 8 inches
apart.
PLANT HEIGHT – They will grow about 20-24 inches tall.
SOIL - Use a regular potting mix. In the garden, make sure that the soil is not
clay or exposed to pests. Cover top of bulbs with only 1/2 inch of soil.
WATER - Water upon planting. They like to be kept moist while they are outside
in the sun. The soil needs to remain damp during their growing season.
Cease watering when the leaves start to yellow in early winter until the following
spring.
FERTILIZER – This helps maintain flower size and count from year to year. For
best results use Roberta’s Flower Magic plant food (M7503) twice a month all
summer long. Stop feeding in late summer until the following spring growth
appears.
TEMPERATURE ZONES 8 to 11 - When nights stay above 45 degrees, place
your plants outside and leave them there all summer long. If you live where it
rarely drops below freezing, you can leave your plants outside year round only
if planted directly into the ground.
LIGHTING - In the summer growing season, full sun or a half of a day of sun
is the absolute best. In the winter, any lighting is fine because the plants are
dormant.
GROOMING - Remove spent flower stems. In addition, cut away any yellow,
brown leaves or broken stems that naturally occur. This grooming is completely
normal and will take place as the plant grows. New leaves and stems appear as
the old ones are pruned away.
DORMANCY - In the early winter, when the foliage begins to turn yellow stop
watering until the next spring. When the leaves are brown cut-away and
remove. Keep them above freezing.
PROPAGATING -These bulbs will re-bloom every year. After 3-5 years, in the
spring or fall, you can divide the bulbs into small pear size divisions and replant
separately if desired.
CUT FLOWERS – They make great long-lasting cut flowers.
