NATURE ATTRACTION – Spectacular foliage, fragrant flowers,
edible fruit, and winter hardy!
KEY TIPS – As a climber, they will fasten themselves to a wall,
trellis, pergola, post or fence growing vertically and laterally. Make
sure the male and female plants are within 6 feet of each other to
assure cross pollination for fruit beginning in the 2nd season.
SHELF LIFE - Plant in larger pots and place outside immediately
after the night temperatures stay above 35 degrees.
PLANT PREPARATION – Unpack your plants immediately removing
any packing material. Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken
stems that may have occurred.
Water them immediately.
POTTED PLANTS - Rather than in the garden you may re-pot into
large containers. Repot the plants into at least 15 inch pots separately
or together inside one larger container. As a climber, they will need
a trellis, cage, or post to cling onto. Make sure the male and female
are within 6 feet of each other to assure cross pollination for fruit.
SOIL – Any type of soil works o.k.
GARDEN PREPARATION Pick a sunny location near a wall or where
you can add a trellis, net, or wire cage or something they can grow
laterally across.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting in garden space 3 to 6 feet
apart.
PLANTING DEPTH - Dig holes twice the width of the root ball and
about 5-6 inches deep. Place them in their holes. Pack soil firmly
around roots.
PLANT HEIGHT – These grow about 15-20 feet tall or long in 3
years.
WATER - Water upon planting. Their soil likes to remain damp
during their growing season.
FERTILIZER – They respond to feeding with a high bloom fertilizer
like Flower Magic plant food (M7503). Twice a month is sufficient.
TEMPERATURE ZONES 4 to 9 When nights stay above 35
degrees, place your plants outside and leave them there. They can
withstand winter temperatures to minus 30 below 0 Farenheit.
LIGHTING - In the summer growing season, 1/2 day sun is the
absolute best. Otherwise dappled shade is sufficient.
BLOOMING – Clusters of fragrant, creamy white flowers 1 1/2 inches
wide begin in early summer.
FRUITING – Make sure the male and female are within 6 feet of
each other to assure cross pollination for fruit. Beginning the 2nd
season in late summer, they will produce delectable grape sized fruits
that have a pleasant, tart, almost strawberry-like flavor and are rich in
vitamin C.
DORMANCY – These plants will lose all of their foliage in the winter.
PRUNING – Pruning can be done in autumn for aesthetics or to
keep the vines in bounds. It is not necessary though it encourages
more robust and bushy growth.
STAKING - As a climber, they will fasten themselves to a wall, trellis,
pergola, post or fence growing vertically and laterally.
