NATURE ATTRACTION – These rugged evergreen houseplants require
very little attention and bloom in the shade inside the home! Atop strong
flowering stalks, their flowering heads of brilliant tangerine-orange appear in
late spring through early summer beginning the second season. They will
live for decades on end and grow more impressive with age.
KEY TIPS – Clivia like it on the dry side to say the least watering every 2
weeks from April through October. From November through March only
water every 2 months!
SHELF LIFE – Plant into pot(s) immediately. After the night temperatures
stay above 50 degrees you may place outside if desired.
DETERMINING THE BOTTOM OR TOP OF CLUMPS – These clumps have
roots radiating from a central point. These fleshy roots should be put into
the soil facing downward.
PLANT PREPARATION- Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken
stems that may have occurred. This grooming is completely normal and will
take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS- Plant into 6-8 inch pots separately or together inside
one larger shallow 10 inch container. Do not re-pot for 3-5 years. They
bloom better when root-bound and crowded.
SOIL- They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will drain
well. Most garden centers carry various brand names with perlite, vermiculite,
soil and sand.
GARDEN PREPARATION – They prefer to be planted in pots so that they
do not receive too much water especially in the winter.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting into one pot space about 4-6 inches.
WATER- Clivia like it on the dry side to say the least watering every 2
weeks from April through October. From November through March only
water every 2 months! Too much water causes pale green or bright cankers
on the leaves eventually damaging the plant permanently.
DRAINAGE -Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain
through the bottom of the pot leaving nothing inside the drip dish below
the pot.
FERTILIZER- To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like
Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a week from April-
September.
LIGHTING- Shade or bright daylight is required. A north window or exposure
is ideal. Direct sun can easily burn the leaves.
BLOOMING -Their flowering heads of brilliant tangerine-orange appear in
late spring through early summer beginning the second season. They will
live for decades on end and grow more impressive with age.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 9 to 11- These are hardy down to about 35 degrees
Farenheit. If you live where it rarely freezes they may remain outside year
round.
WINTER DORMANCY – Plants rest from November through April. Though
they keep their foliage. From November – March only water every 2 months!
GROOMING- Cut away spent flowers stalks at the base and remove any
leaves as they wither or turn brown. This grooming is completely normal and
will take place as the plant grows. New leaves and stems appear as the old
ones are pruned away.
PROPAGATING- These plants should be left untouched..
CUT FLOWERS – Leave them on their plants rather than using them in
vases.
STAKING – The flower stems usually need no staking.
