NATURE ATTRACTION – This climber’s sweetly scented and yielding
nectar will attract attention of visiting birds and bees. It has a long
flowering period through summer and autumn and is worth giving a
prominent position where it can be admired for both its variegated
pink and green foliage and pink flowers.
KEY TIPS – As a climber, they need a wall, trellis, net, or wire cage.
These plants require little attention and grow in about any soil type.
Heavy pruning in autumn after flowering encourages more robust and
bushy growth with more profuse flowers next spring.
SHELF LIFE - Plant in larger pots and place outside immediately
after the night temperatures stay above 35 degrees.
PLANT PREPARATION – Unpack your plants immediately removing
any packing material. Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken
stems that may have occurred.
Water them immediately.
POTTED PLANTS - Rather than in the garden you may re-pot into
large containers. Repot the plants into at least 15 inch pots separately
or together inside one larger container. As a climber, they need a wall,
trellis, net, or wire cage.
SOIL – Any type of soil works o.k.
GARDEN PREPARATION Pick a sunny location near a wall or where
you can add a trellis, net, or wire cage.
PLANTING SPACING – If planting in garden or together in one container
space 3 to 6 feet apart.
PLANTING DEPTH - Dig holes twice the width of the root ball and
about 5-6 inches deep. Place them in their holes. Pack soil firmly
around roots.
PLANT HEIGHT – These grow about 12 to 15 feet tall in 3 years.
WATER - Water upon planting. Their soil likes to remain damp during
their growing season.
FERTILIZER – They respond to feeding with a high bloom fertilizer
like Flower Magic plant food (M7503). Twice a month is sufficient.
TEMPERATURE ZONES 4 to10 -When nights stay above 35
degrees, place your plants outside and leave them there. They can
withstand winter temperatures to minus 30 below 0 Farenheit.
LIGHTING - In the summer growing season, full sun is the absolute
best. Otherwise a _ day of sun is sufficient.
BLOOMING – Under correct conditions, blooming begins in mid-
June and last well into late September.
DORMANCY – These plants will lose all of their foliage in the winter.
PRUNING – Prune hard after flowering each season to about _ its
current height. This encourages branching. In addition if you prune
1/3 of vines all of the way to the ground, more shoots will occur next
spring from the ground up.
STAKING - As a climber, they need a wall, trellis, net, or wire cage.
